Building Resilience in Our Students: From Trauma Aware to Trauma Responsive

Elyse Pratt-Ronco, UMaine at Farmington Upward Bound

This workshop will begin with giving a background of the trauma approach continuum (trauma aware, informed, sensitive, or responsive) in order to situate the workshop and its relevance in light of the resilience needed to be successful in post-secondary education.

It will provide specific strategies practitioners can use (and share with their colleagues) to better support students. These include building trust, asking particular open-ended questions, granularization for anxiety, holding space for students, positive psychology (PERMA), and connecting to other resources, etc. We will also take time to talk about trauma stewardship (which is how educators and practitioners can take care of themselves in order to better take care of students).

There will be time for small group discussions and application of the strategies and for people to do some goal-setting, planning for implementation beyond the workshop.
